Organisations may not be aware that a simple Power Quality Survey carried out on electrical systems and networks can help improve your Power Factor and in turn save you money by increasing electrical efficiency.

Power Factor Correction is a well proven technology and is one of the fundamental principles of electrical engineering. It has been applied since the early part of the 20th Century and offers many benefits to industrial electrical consumers, such as improved electrical energy efficiency, cost savings on your electricity bill due to reducing wastage and also providing extra electrical capacity for increased production.

Power Factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical power is consumed. The ideal Power Factor is unity (or one) and anything less than 100% efficiency means that extra power is required to achieve the actual task at hand. This surplus energy is known as reactive power, which unfortunately is necessary to provide the magnetising effect required by motors and other inductive loads to perform their desired functions.

Power Factor Correction restores the Power Factor of an electrical system to as close to unity as is economically possible. This is normally achieved by the addition of capacitors to the electrical network, which compensate for the reactive power demand of the inductive load and thus reduce the burden on the supply.

Metartec e3 can supply an extensive range of Power Factor Correction equipment including regulators, capacitors and capacitor banks for the compensation of reactive energy at low and medium voltages. We can also provide rejection, absorption and active filters for installations with harmonic distortion problems.

If you are unsure as to what the Power Factor of your electrical system is, Metartec e3 can carry out a Power Quality Survey using highly accurate power analysers. This survey will indicate if an electrical system is oversized, therefore wasting energy, or if it too small to satisfy your power requirments, affecting the power quality. It will also identify Power Factor and harmonic issues allowing Metartec's experienced engineers to recommend a solution to improve the Power Factor of your installation and, in turn, save you money.
